World Youth Day

World Youth Day (WYD) is an international encounter with the Pope which is typically celebrated every three years in a different country. The most recent WYD was celebrated in Rio de Janeiro in July 2013. At the final Mass of WYD 2013, Pope Francis announced that the next World Youth Day will be held in Krakow, Poland in 2016. There were 17 pilgrims who went to WYD in Rio in the official WYD Auckland Diocese Pilgrimage, and two volunteers who were part of a team of 60,000 volunteers in Brazil. Martin Leung-Wai from Clover Park installed an exhibition as part of the Youth Festival at World Youth Day Brazil: Oceania: a faith journey.

In the Auckland Diocese we celebrate World Youth Day each July (normally in the middle weekend of the school holidays). The next WYD Auckland Experience will be held on 30 and 31 July 2016 (the same weekend as the Closing Mass at the International World Youth Day in Poland). The theme for World Youth Day for 2016 is “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy” (Mt 5:7).
